Help & Support
A quick guide to using your school’s stories, learning activities, student support tools and progress records.
What the system does
The Kimika & Kalynn SEL/ELA Learning System connects the Kimika & Kalynn stories with classroom instruction, student reflection and school support.
SEL means social-emotional learning: understanding feelings, managing behavior, building relationships and making responsible choices. ELA means English language arts: reading, vocabulary, discussion, writing and using evidence from a text.
Schools use the system to organize people and classes, plan instruction, assign activities, review student work and document support. Available tools depend on your role, school setup and license.
Who it serves
Students
Open assigned activities, read stories, write reflections, practice choices and review feedback. Use Calm Corner to find calming activities or ask a trusted adult for support.
Teachers
Plan lessons, assign class activities, build discussion stories, review student responses and record observations.
Counselors and support staff
Work with counseling groups, track student support, review follow-up requests and document progress within assigned access.
School administrators and SEL coordinators
Set up the school, manage staff and rosters, guide implementation, organize school years and review authorized school reports.
Parents and guardians
Use the family portal to view information the school has approved for sharing about linked students and to access family resources.
LGM administrators
Manage school accounts, licenses and shared platform resources.
How it works
- Set up your school. The school administrator confirms school information and the current school year, then follows the guided setup checklist.
- Add people and learning groups. Add or import staff and students. Create classes and counseling groups, check roster links and arrange parent access.
- Plan a learning activity. Choose a book, an SEL skill and a reading or writing objective. Use a lesson plan or an existing activity.
- Assign and complete the activity. Staff select the intended class, group or students. Students open their activities, read, reflect and submit their work.
- Review and respond. Teachers and counselors review work, provide feedback and follow up on support requests.
- Record and review progress. Use observations, student work and appropriate reports to plan next steps. Archive prior-year information through school-year management when ready.
Start with one class and one activity. Add more tools as your school becomes comfortable with the routine.
Main learning tools
- Role dashboard and weekly planning: find the tasks that match your responsibilities and organize the week’s teaching.
- Stories Without Endings: read an unfinished story, discuss choices and write a thoughtful ending. Staff can create additional stories with Dilemma Builder.
- Reflection Journal: select a mood, connect a story to your experience and express your thinking through writing or an optional drawing.
- Calm Corner and notifications: practice calming strategies and connect students with school adults who can respond.
- Lesson plans, standards and PDF resources: prepare instruction, review standards alignment and find printable activities.
- Counselor and MTSS tools: document support goals, interventions and follow-up. MTSS means a multi-tiered system of supports.
- Portfolios, benchmarks and evidence packets: review work and observations, then prepare information appropriate for the intended audience.
Activity completion shows participation. It does not by itself establish learning. A benchmark item marked Not Observed means there is no rating for that skill; it is not a low score.
Access and reading support
Sign in through the portal for your role. Your school administrator manages account access and class or group assignments. Parent access requires a school-approved student link.
Use Reading Options where available to enlarge text and reduce interface motion. Your browser’s zoom controls provide further enlargement. Student stories offer Read Aloud, pacing and reading-display controls; the story text remains available without audio.
Use Tab and Shift+Tab to move through controls, Enter to follow links or activate buttons, and arrow keys to change a selected mood. Drawing is optional; students may describe their idea in writing.
Common questions
I cannot sign in. What should I check?
Check that you are using the correct staff, student or parent portal and entering the credentials supplied by your school. Ask your school administrator to check your account status, school access and student or guardian links. Never send your password in a support request.
A student, class or assignment is missing.
Check the current school year and selected filters. Ask the school administrator to confirm that the student is active and linked to the correct class or counseling group, and that the assignment targets the intended students.
My form did not save, or it says “form expired.”
Keep a copy of any unsaved writing in a school-approved location, reload the page and sign in again if requested. Complete required fields and look for the save confirmation. If the problem returns, record the page name and exact error message for your administrator.
Read Aloud is unavailable or silent.
Check your device volume and audio output. Read Aloud availability depends on your browser and device. You can still read the complete story text and finish the activity without speech.
A PDF will not open.
Try the Download PDF option and open the file with your device’s PDF reader. If access is denied or the file is missing, ask the school administrator to check the resource and your school’s access.
How do staff handle a help request or journal follow-up?
Open Notification Center, choose the notification and select the student. Read the request details. Acknowledging a Calm Corner request records that it has been read; mark it resolved when finished, or unresolved while work continues. For a journal follow-up, select the student and save the review message.
Get support
Students and families: contact your teacher, counselor or school administrator first.
School staff: ask your school administrator to check account access, rosters and setup. For a platform issue, use your established LGM support contact or visit Lyons Gold Standard Multimedia LLC.
Include the page or tool name, date and time, browser/device, what you tried, what you expected and the exact error message. If you include a screenshot, remove student names, private notes, passwords and access codes.
If a student needs immediate help, contact a trusted adult directly and follow your school’s emergency procedures. Do not wait for an online notification to be read.
